Nubble Light - Cape Neddick Light The Nubble Lighthouse has appeared on more postcards, calendars, and other souvenirs than nearly any other New England lighthouse. Part of the allure of Nubble Lighthouse is its mystical nature. You can almost reach it but you can't get there. The Nubble is a small, Rocky island a short distance off the eastern point of Cape Neddick Maine. The 41-foot cast-iron Nubble Light tower was built in 1874 and first illuminated on July 1, 1879. The distinctive red oil house was built in 1902, and the walkway connecting the lighthouse to the keeper's house was added in 1911. The usual way of getting to and from the Nubble was by boat. For a time, the keepers used a bucket suspended on a line across the channel to transport supplies and on a few occasions their school bound children. The light was automated in 1987 and the last keeper was removed. The lighthouse officially became the property of York, ME in 1998. Each of the ornaments in our collection are finely detailed to capture what makes each lighthouse special. Some lighthouses are made of steel, similar to the Portland Headlight, others are made out of hand cut granite block, similar to the Thatcher Twin Lights; all the details are captured in our Christmas ornaments. The ornaments are hand cast using our specialized centrifugal casting machine using vulcanized rubber molds. Our lead-free pewter is heated to a range of 500 - 600 degrees Fahrenheit. The pewter is then cast into the spinning mold carefully by hand. Once the pewter solidifies, the raw ornaments are taken out of the mold. The castings that are satisfactory to the watchful eye of the Pewter smith are then deburred by hand. The ornaments are then put through our antiquing process. After drying completely, the Christmas ornaments are buffed by hand, removing just the right amount of the antiquing solution to create the beautifully detailed ornament. Finally, the ornaments are dusted, inspected, and packaged with our red elastic bow hangers.
