USS Ranger Christmas Ornament Commissioned in October 1777, The Ranger was built in the shipyard at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She was the second ship ever commissioned by the United States Navy. Her first captain was the famous Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones, and he lived in Portsmouth while the ship was under construction. The Ranger was the first ship ever to fly the new American flag, which had been carefully stitched by the young women of Portsmouth. She was the first American vessel to be saluted by a foreign power. And on April 24, 1778, The Ranger became the first American ship to capture an enemy vessel when Captain Jones sailed his ship right to the shores of England and captured his majesty's ship the Drake. The original Hampshire Pewter Christmas ornament depicts The Ranger under full sail, as she must have looked when she sailed in 1777.Customize Your Keepsake There is no space on this ornament for engraving, however check out our Bow Hanger to engrave a name, date or special message.
